GP to GP Communication Project

The Clinical Information Consultancy Ltd played a leading role in the development of NHS standards for electronic communication or patient records between GP computer systems (GP2GP).

During the late 1990's David Markwell (Principal Consultancy) was the leader of one of the four project teams that developed the CEN Prestandard ENV13606. In 1999 he was a member of the team that experimented with the resulting messages in the joint EU/NHS research project XML-EPR. This involved working with four GP system suppliers to test the viability of using ENV13606 Part 4 as a basis for record communication between GP systems.

In 2001-2003 the results of this work were taken forward by the NHS GP2GP Project. The messages were redesigned following the [Health Level 7|HL7 Version 3]] approach and more rigorously tested. Both David Markwell (Principal Consultant) and Andrew Perry (Senior Associated Consultant) were closely involved in message design, implementation support and testing phases of the this project. The end results of this project were demonstration of the feasibility of GP to GP record transfer and a detailed report of the results of testing.

In 2004 the NHS National Programme for Information Technology adopted the GP to GP specifications. After further revisions GP2GP is being implemented in 2006-2007 as part of NHS Connecting for Health.
