The Clinical Information Consultancy Ltd was a founder member of HL7 UK (in 1999). Over the last eighteen years CIC Ltd has contributed to many projects related to standardisation of communication between clinical information systems. We helped to found HL7 UK in recognition that HL7 had become the leading organisation in health informatics standardisation.
The membership of HL7, HL7-UK and its International Affiliates spans a diverse range of overlapping interest groups in more than twenty countries. Members include system suppliers, health professionals, health service managers and others with expertise in health informatics. HL7 unites this diverse, and often competing, group of members in a shared endeavour to produce useful, usable standards for interoperability.
HL7 Version 3 provides a generic reference information model and a method for developing consistent communication standards from that model. The resulting standards are technology-independent and can be implemented in different ways. These include a direct automated mapping into XML messages that comply with UK Government e-GIF recommendations.
HL7 Version 3 is the underlying standard for the communication specifications being developed and specified by the NHS Connecting for Health.
CIC has been closely involved in turning the HL7 Version 3 method from theory into reality. Through involvement in the GP to GP Project we have extensive hands on experience of using the HL7 Version 3 method to develop messages and deliver clinical communication. We also voluntarily contributed to the development of key parts of the tool set used for design and documentation of messages.
More recently we have taken leading roles in both the HL7 Clinical Statement Project (developing standard patterns clinical information exchange) and the HL7 TermInfo Project (specifying standard guidelines for use of SNOMED CT® in HL7 clinical communications).
Our direct involvement in these HL7 Working Meetings as independent experts allows us to offer an expert service to other organisations. These services may be of particular value to organisations exploring HL7 for the first time or needing additional expert input to complete or evaluate a specific project.
