SNOMED Clinical Terms

SNOMED Clinical Terms® (SNOMED CT®) is a healthcare terminology owned and maintained by the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation. The IHTSDO is also known as SNOMED SDO®.

SNOMED CT is considered to be the most comprehensive, multilingual clinical terminology in the world.

SNOMED CT was created between 1999 and 2002 by the convergence of SNOMED RT® and the Clinical Terms Version 3 (CTV3 - formerly known as the Read Codes). Prior to the merger, SNOMED RT® was developed by the College of American Pathologists and CTV3 was a product of the National Health Service in England. The result of the merger, SNOMED CT, was owned by CAP until April 2007 when ownership was transferred to the IHTSDO.

SNOMED CT incorporates the codes, concepts and terms from all versions of the Read Codes and from earlier versions of SNOMED International.

Within the United Kingdom, SNOMED CT is the "NHS preferred clinical terminology" and has an important role in NHS Connecting for Health (the UK NHS National Programme for Information Technology).

The Clinical Information Consultancy Ltd offers SNOMED CT Training and Consultancy services to support implementation of SNOMED Clincal Terms®.
